Summer Associate Program

Lockridge Grindal Nauen is dedicated to the advancement of outstanding law students. Through our Summer Associate program, we offer an opportunity to gain first hand experience in many areas of law including employment, general litigation, government relations, healthcare, environmental law and class action litigation. Our program allows law students an opportunity to work throughout the school year, not just during the summer. We believe that a year-long clerkship enhances the students' working knowledge by giving them more opportunities for real work experience, thereby giving them an advantage over classmates who participate in the typical summer programs. Lockridge Grindal Nauen is committed to diversity in our workplace and actively recruit Summer Associate candidates who reflect the variety of our community and clients. For more information about selection criteria and application deadlines, call us at 612-339-6900.

Former Summer Associates

Here’s what former summer associates have said about the LGN program:

“Lockridge Grindal Nauen provides an exceptional summer associate experience. The work is substantive and meaningful. You research and write for attorneys who appreciate your input and provide invaluable feedback. An assigned mentor is there to offer guidance. But all the attorneys are willing to answer questions and talk about their practice. The firm also offers opportunities to hone your writing and oral advocacy skills. And summer associates are always invited to watch LGN attorneys in action -- arguing a motion in court, putting on a high-profile trial, or taking depositions. I had expected a good summer at LGN, but the program completely exceeded my expectations.”

Devona L. Wells, Summer Associate 2009
William Mitchell College of Law

“I could not imagine a better summer experience than the one I had with LGN. The lawyers and staff were friendly, we had meaningful and interesting work to do, and I felt fully integrated in the firm and important from the very first day. Over the summer, we participated in mock oral arguments with associates, observed a trial from beginning to end, and researched and wrote on a variety of fascinating legal topics. From the very first day, I was amazed at the amount of time that excellent lawyers were willing to take to provide feedback, mentoring, and great projects. It is no exaggeration to say that working at LGN has been my favorite part of law school.”

Kate Baxter-Kauf, Summer Associate 2009
University of Minnesota Law School

“LGN fully integrates its clerks into the firm's practice. Summer associates receive meaty assignments that often contribute directly to the outcome of a case. But summers aren't left to their own devices. As a mid-size firm, LGN provides valuable supervision from partners and senior associates, who are talented, seasoned litigators. The result is a summer experience that is both eminently practical and thoroughly exciting.”

Robert L. Whitener, Summer Associate 2006
University of Minnesota Law School, Class of 2007

“Anyone who has ever spent any extended amount of time with lawyers knows how tough it is to get them to talk about something other than work. What I love about LGN is that the attorneys break this stereotype. When there is work to be done, certainly they do it. But they aren't obsessed. This summer they found time to get to know me and let me get to know them - and it didn't take a series of summer-camp-like activities outside of work. That is to say, you don't have to force LGN attorneys to be normal or remove them from the office to engage them in conversation on topics other than law. Yes, the projects were diverse and challenging but I enjoyed my summer because LGN offers more than interesting, hands-on projects; it offers affable people with whom to work.”

Patrick J. Murphy, Summer Associate 2006
University of Minnesota Law School, Class of 2008

“Lockridge Grindal Nauen is a wonderful place to spend a summer and get a taste for what it's like to be a lawyer. Every eager law student hopes to have a great first experience with law outside the classroom, and LGN provides it. The work is challenging. LGN's summer associates are immediately relied on for research and drafting. No window dressing here. The firm needs us. When I arrived, waiting on my desk was an assignment to draft the legal argument for an out-of-state brief due in a week. And the assignments just got better from there. The attorneys value your comments. They also encourage you and are always available for questions. The firm offers many seminars on strengthening your writing, research, and practical skills. There are many fun outings too. Mentoring lunches, bowling, baseball games, and other opportunities provided great forums for students to get to know everyone outside of work. I couldn't have hoped for a better summer associate experience.”
